English - Reported speech - class 9 


Reported speech is always in past.


  • Is = was
  • Are = were 
  • Has = had
  • Have = had 
  • Will = would 
  • Shall = should 
  • Can = could
  • Do / does = did
  • Today = that day
  • Tonight = that night
  • Yesterday = the previous day
  • Tomorrow = the next day 
  • This = that 
  • How = then 


REPORTED SPEECH IS MOSTLY CONVERTED INTO THIRD PERSON 


    • When the speaker asks a question [ connector - If or whether]
    • When the speaker speaks a sentence [ connector - that ]
    • When the speaker gives a command or request [ connector - to ]
    • When speaker ask a question “Wh question”[ connector - NO CONNECTOR]
    • Universal truth [ connector - NO CONNECTOR]

    1. The king asked ,”Do you want to enjoy your life?”
    2. The president said,”Our nation is safe from enemies”
    3. The king told ,”Get out of here”
    4. The man said ,”please sir down”
    5. The king said ,” Where is my crown?”
    6. The king said ,” The earth is round.”
    7. Jennie said ,”I spent all my pocket money yesterday.”
    8. Maria said ,” Is she reading this book now?”
    9. You said ,” Don’t open this door.”
    10. Jason said,” who gave him this book yesterday?”
    11. The president said ,” The Ganga is the holy river.”


Answers-

    1. The king asked if he wanted to enjoy his life.
    2. The president said that his nation was safe from enemies.
    3. The king told to get out of there.
    4. The man requested to sit down.
    5. The king asked where was his crown,
    6. The king said that the earth is round.
    7. Jennie said that she spent all her pocket money the previous day.
    8. Maria asked if she was reading that book then?
    9. You said not to open that door.
    10. Jason asked who gave him that book the previous day.
